Gyeong (庚) and Im (壬) in Korean Saju: Bright Metal, Clear Water
Gyeong (庚, Yang Metal) and Im (壬, Yang Water) form one of the pairings classical writers praise most: a rock spring feeding a river. Gyeong gives freely and enjoys it, Im draws on Gyeong in its own independent way, and the combination often shows up as quick, clear thinking together.
The elemental dynamic
Metal produces Water (금생수, 金生水). Think of water seeping out of a granite cliff and gathering into a stream that runs to the sea. Gyeong is the rock and the blade; Im is the river and the ocean. Both are Yang, so the polarity is the same: two big, outgoing stems with similar scale.
Classical literature has a phrase for this flow, 金白水淸 (geum-baek su-cheong), "white metal, clear water." It describes a chart where Metal and Water feed each other cleanly, and it is traditionally linked with intelligence, eloquence and a clean sense of style. The water also cools and rinses the blade, so Gyeong's harshness tends to soften in Im's company. The warning on the other side is cold: Metal and Water with no Fire anywhere can feel brilliant but chilly.
How each sees the other
- Gyeong sees Im as Eating God (식신, 食神, siksin). Eating God is relaxed output: enjoyment, generosity, hobbies, craft, the pleasure of producing something. Spending time with Im lets Gyeong loosen up and simply enjoy itself.
- Im sees Gyeong as Indirect Resource (편인, 偏印, pyeonin). Indirect Resource is unconventional support: intuition, specialist knowledge, a mentor who teaches by example rather than instruction. Im takes from Gyeong what it finds useful and leaves the rest.
Traditionally, Eating God is a child star for a woman, so a Gyeong woman may care for Im with a warm, easy protectiveness. Indirect Resource, in some lineages, is a stepmother or non-standard guardian star, matching support that is real but unconventional. The neutral reading works for any pair: Gyeong gives and enjoys giving, and Im draws strength in an independent way. More at Eating God and Indirect Resource.
Combination or clash
No stem combination and no clash. Gyeong combines (합, 合) with Eul; Im combines with Jeong. Gyeong's stem clash (충, 沖) is with Gap (甲庚) and Im's is with Byeong (丙壬). Neither touches the other. The relationship is pure generation, which tends to make it easygoing: no fated pull, no structural friction, mostly a steady flow from one to the other.
In love
Easy conversation, shared humour and a lot of movement: trips, projects, debates that run late. Gyeong becomes lighter around Im; Im feels backed without being managed. The typical issue is imbalance of effort. Gyeong may give more than it notices, and Im, being independent, may not always say thank you. Two Yang stems can also both be blunt about plans and schedules.
At work
This is a good pairing for anything that turns expertise into communication. A Gyeong technical lead and an Im strategist or presenter; an engineer and a product marketer; a coach and a fast-learning athlete. Gyeong supplies the substance, Im spreads it wide. Because Indirect Resource learns on its own terms, Im may not follow Gyeong's method exactly. Results usually matter more than process here, so it works best when Gyeong judges outcomes rather than steps.
Making it work
Keep a little warmth in the system. Shared meals, sunshine, people who bring Fire energy all help a Metal and Water pair stay friendly as well as sharp. Gyeong can ask for something in return now and then; Im can show appreciation openly.

FAQ
What does 金白水淸 mean?
"White metal, clear water" is a classical phrase for Metal feeding Water cleanly. It is traditionally associated with intelligence and eloquence, and it fits the Gyeong and Im pairing well.
Who gives more in a Gyeong and Im pair?
Elementally Gyeong does, since Metal produces Water and Gyeong sees Im as Eating God. Im receives that support as Indirect Resource, in an independent way.
Do Gyeong and Im clash?
No. Gyeong clashes with Gap and Im clashes with Byeong, and they do not form a stem combination.
