Gi (己) and Im (壬) Saju Compatibility: The Riverbank and the River
Gi (己, Yin Earth) and Im (壬, Yang Water) carry the classic spouse-star pattern in both directions, yet the elements are oddly matched in size. A garden-scale earth is trying to hold a river. The pairing tends to be loyal and orderly when it works, and muddied when either side pushes too hard.
The elemental dynamic
On paper, Earth controls Water (토극수, 土剋水). Gi is soft, cultivated soil. Im is a broad river or open sea. Gi is Yin and Im is Yang, so the polarity is opposite, which makes the control relation a "direct", orderly one rather than a harsh one.
The interesting detail is scale. A riverbank shapes a river only where the river allows it. Classical commentary on Im even has a compact warning, 己土濁壬 (gi-to tak-im), "Gi earth muddies Im water": soft soil that tries to contain a big current tends to dissolve into it, and both end up cloudy. So the control flows from Gi to Im in theory, while in daily life Im often sets the pace and Gi does the shaping at the edges.
How each sees the other
- Gi sees Im as Direct Wealth (정재, 正財, jeongjae). Direct Wealth is what you manage, earn and keep: practical resources, steady effort, household order. Gi wants to organise Im's flow into something useful.
- Im sees Gi as Direct Officer (정관, 正官, jeonggwan). Direct Officer is fair authority, reputation, rules and responsibility. Gi offers Im the boundaries and social legitimacy that a restless river rarely gives itself.
Traditional gendered reading: for a man, Direct Wealth is the classical wife star; for a woman, Direct Officer is the classical husband star. So a Gi man and an Im woman fit the old template neatly. Reverse the genders and the reading shifts: a Gi woman relates to Im through money and management, and an Im man relates to Gi through career and standing. A neutral version: Gi manages and anchors, Im accepts structure and gains respectability. Details on Direct Wealth and Direct Officer.
It is worth comparing this with Mu and Gye, which share exactly these Ten God roles. The difference is that Mu and Gye also form a stem combination. Gi and Im have the roles without the binding.
Combination or clash
There is no stem combination and no clash here. Gi combines (합, 合) with Gap; Im combines with Jeong. Im's stem clash (충, 沖) is with Byeong (丙壬), not with Gi. Without 合, the attraction depends on the roles themselves and on the rest of the charts rather than on a built-in pull. Without 沖, there is no structural opposition. Expect a relationship that is built through mutual usefulness and agreed rules.
In love
Gi tends to be the planner and the keeper of shared commitments; Im brings breadth, curiosity and social reach. Good periods feel like a well-run home with lively conversation. Bad periods feel like Gi trying to hold back a flood of plans and Im feeling hemmed in by lists. Arguments often turn murky rather than explosive, true to the 濁 image.
At work
A compliance lead and an ambitious strategist, a finance manager and a sales head. Gi converts Im's movement into reliable results. Im respects Gi's standards as long as they feel fair rather than petty.
Making it work
Gi works best choosing a few banks to hold firmly instead of trying to contain everything. Im can accept those few as genuine commitments. Clear agreements about money and time prevent most of the murk.
Day Master compatibility is only one layer: Korean 궁합 (宮合, gunghap) compares whole charts, including day branches (the spouse palace), element balance, and luck pillars. See the compatibility index for other pairs or the free calculator for your Day Master.
FAQ
Is Gi and Im a husband and wife star match?
Yes in the traditional sense: Gi sees Im as Direct Wealth and Im sees Gi as Direct Officer. It is one favourable layer that the rest of the charts can strengthen or weaken.
What does 己土濁壬 mean?
It is a classical warning that soft Gi earth muddies Im water. In a pairing it suggests that over-control from Gi tends to cloud things rather than contain them.
Do Gi and Im combine like Mu and Gye?
No. They share the same Ten God roles as Mu and Gye, but Gi combines with Gap and Im combines with Jeong, so there is no 合 between them.
