Gap (甲) and Gyeong (庚) Compatibility: The Axe and the Tree
Gap (갑 甲) and Gyeong (경 庚) are the tree and the axe. Metal controls Wood, both stems are Yang, and the pair forms the stem clash 甲庚沖. Gap sees Gyeong as Seven Killings, a force that pressures it, while Gyeong sees Gap as Indirect Wealth, something to take on and shape. This is one of the most intense Day Master pairings: high challenge, high stimulation, little natural ease.
The elemental dynamic
Metal cuts Wood. With both stems Yang, the cut is full strength: raw ore against a standing trunk, no buffer of polarity to soften it. Gyeong is blunt, decisive, loyal, and impatient with indecision. Gap is upright, principled, and does not like being told where to grow.
Classical manuals do not treat this purely as a negative. A tree that is never cut stays a tree; timber that is split can build houses or feed a fire. One well-known phrase from the seasonal texts, "split Gap to bring out Jeong" (벽갑인정 劈甲引丁), describes Gyeong cutting Gap so it can fuel Jeong fire. Applied to people, Gyeong can turn Gap's raw potential into something usable, at a price.
How each sees the other
Gap sees Gyeong as Seven Killings (칠살 七殺 chilsal). Seven Killings is the controlling element in the same polarity: pressure without courtesy, challenge, ambition, and the push to perform. In a woman's chart it is classically a husband or lover star with a forceful, sometimes stormy character. A neutral reading: Gyeong is the person who tests Gap, makes it sharper and braver, and sometimes makes it feel cornered.
Gyeong sees Gap as Indirect Wealth (편재 偏財 pyeonjae). Indirect Wealth is the element you control, in the same polarity: opportunity, ventures, broad resources, and in classical terms the father star or a man's non-formal partner star. Gyeong tends to see Gap as a project worth taking on, attractive in part because it resists.
Combination or clash
This pair forms a stem clash (충 沖 chung), 갑경충 甲庚沖 gapgyeong chung. A clash is direct opposition between two stems: the energies collide instead of blending. In a relationship it tends to show as frank arguments, decisions made abruptly, and a sense that neither will back down. Clash is also movement. It breaks stalemates and forces change, which some pairs find energizing. There is no stem combination here.
How a clash plays out depends a great deal on the rest of the charts. Water in either chart, which Metal produces and which feeds Wood, is classically the mediator between Metal and Wood.
In love
Sparks are likely, in both senses. Gyeong admires Gap's backbone; Gap admires Gyeong's courage. Over time the question becomes whether the cuts shape or wound. Gyeong's bluntness can feel like an attack to Gap, and Gap's refusal to bend can look like stubborn pride to Gyeong.
At work
Productive as rivals or as a critic and creator, where Gyeong stress-tests Gap's plans. Harder as co-leaders of one team, where clashes become public.
Making it work
- Agree on rules for disagreement before you need them.
- Gyeong: decide what you want to shape and what you will leave alone.
- Gap: hear the content of Gyeong's criticism separately from its tone.
- Look for Water in both charts or in shared routines that cool things down.
Remember that Day Master compatibility is one layer. Korean compatibility reading (궁합 宮合 gunghap) compares whole charts, including the day branches (the spouse palace), element balance and luck pillar timing, and a clash on the stems can be offset elsewhere. FAQ
Do Gap and Gyeong clash?
Yes. 甲庚 is one of the four stem clashes, read as direct opposition and frequent friction. Its practical effect depends on the rest of both charts.
Can a Gap and Gyeong couple work?
Many do. The pairing is challenging rather than doomed, and it tends to go better with clear communication and balancing Water elsewhere in the charts.
What Ten Gods do Gap and Gyeong see?
Gap sees Gyeong as Seven Killings, the Ten God of pressure. Gyeong sees Gap as Indirect Wealth, the Ten God of opportunity.
