Two Im (壬) Day Masters in Korean Saju: Where Two Rivers Meet
When two Im (壬, Yang Water) Day Masters pair up, it looks like a confluence: two rivers joining into one wider, faster stream. There is plenty of energy, curiosity and shared appetite for the world. The open question is where all that water is going to go.
The elemental dynamic
The relation is the same element and the same polarity: Yang Water and Yang Water. Im is the great river, the tide, the open ocean. It is adaptable, broad-minded and restless, with a talent for finding the way around obstacles. Two Im together double that volume.
Classical writers on Water are clear that a strong current needs two things: banks and an outlet. The banks are Earth, especially Mu (戊, Yang Earth), which acts as the dyke. The outlet is Wood, which Water feeds and which gives the current something useful to do. A pair of Im people who both have little Earth or Wood in their charts may find their life together exciting but hard to steer, with plans multiplying faster than they get finished.
How each sees the other
Each sees the other as Friend (비견, 比肩, bigyeon), the star of an equal: same element, same polarity, standing shoulder to shoulder. Friend is about independence, solidarity, frankness and also the steady pressure of being compared with someone who is just like you.
This is a mirror dynamic. Two Im partners usually share a love of freedom, ideas and movement, and they rarely feel smothered by each other. The downside of the mirror shows up when both want to lead the expedition or both want to leave the dishes. Each also recognises the other's habit of drifting off mid-conversation toward a new plan, which can be endearing or maddening.
In traditional texts, Friend is a peer or sibling star of the same sex, not a spouse star, and a man's peer stars are sometimes said to compete with Wealth, his classical wife star. The neutral reading is that this relationship begins as a partnership of equals with no automatic roles. More on Friend.
Combination or clash
A stem does not combine with or clash against itself, so two Im Day Masters have neither 合 (합, hap) nor 沖 (충, chung) between them. Outside influences still matter:
- Im's combination partner is Jeong (丁, Yin Fire). Two Im stems facing one Jeong form what some practitioners call a contested combination (쟁합, 爭合, jaenghap), a picture of two equals drawn to the same warm attraction.
- Im's clash partner is Byeong (丙, Yang Fire, 丙壬). A Byeong year or luck pillar can stir both partners at the same time, sometimes in the same direction.
In love
Lively, social and full of plans: travel, moves, new ventures. Two Im partners tend to give each other space generously and forgive quickly. The risks are follow-through and grounding. Bills, routines and long commitments can slip while both are busy with the next idea. Arguments are usually loud and short.
At work
Strong for startups, trading, logistics, international work and anything where speed and adaptability pay off. Two Im colleagues generate a lot. They benefit from a third person, ideally with strong Earth, to set boundaries and close loops.
Making it work
- Build banks together: a shared budget, a fixed weekly meeting, a few non-negotiable commitments.
- Give the current an outlet: a joint project with a visible result.
- Decide who leads which trip before the trip starts.
Day Master compatibility is one layer. Korean 궁합 (宮合, gunghap) compares whole charts: the day branches (each person's spouse palace), the five-element balance, and the timing of luck pillars. Two Im people with different day branches can feel quite different together. See more on the compatibility index or find your Day Master with the free calculator.
FAQ
Are two Im Day Masters compatible?
They usually get along easily and respect each other's freedom, since each sees the other as Friend. The challenge is structure and follow-through, which the rest of each chart may supply.
Do two Im stems clash?
No. A stem does not clash with itself. Im clashes with Byeong, and a Byeong year can affect both partners at once.
What element helps an Im and Im couple?
Classical texts point to Earth for banks and Wood for an outlet. In practice that often means shared structure plus a shared project.
