Jeong (丁) and Gyeong (庚) Compatibility in Korean Saju: The Forge
Jeong (丁) and Gyeong (庚) are the forge and the ore. Classical Saju treats this as one of the most useful pairings in the whole system: Gyeong's raw strength becomes a tool only when Jeong's focused flame works on it. Between people it reads as shaping, respect and a fair amount of heat.
The elemental dynamic
The relation is Fire controls Metal, with Jeong in the controlling role. The polarity differs: Jeong is Yin Fire, Gyeong is Yang Metal. Opposite-polarity control is the regulated kind, closer to guidance than to force.
Here the image is unusually specific. Byeong's sunlight only warms metal, but Jeong is the blacksmith's fire, concentrated enough to soften steel so it can be hammered into something useful. Seasonal manuals often name Jeong as what Gyeong needs most. In human terms, Jeong tends to see Gyeong's potential and refine it, and Gyeong, despite its toughness, tends to accept that refining from Jeong more readily than from anyone louder.
How each sees the other
Jeong sees Gyeong as Direct Wealth (정재 正財, jeongjae). Gyeong sees Jeong as Direct Officer (정관 正官, jeonggwan).
These are the two classical spouse stars. Traditionally, Direct Wealth is the wife star for a man and Direct Officer the husband star for a woman, so a male Jeong with a female Gyeong lines up with the old textbook pattern. Other combinations of gender read through the neutral meanings below.
Direct Wealth is steady, earned value: something you look after with patience. Jeong tends to see Gyeong as worth investing in for the long term. Direct Officer is fair authority, standards and reputation. Gyeong tends to experience Jeong as someone whose judgement it respects, which, for a stem known for doing things its own way, is notable. See Direct Wealth and Direct Officer.
Combination or clash
There is no stem combination (천간합 天干合, cheongan-hap) and no stem clash (천간충 天干沖, cheongan-chung) between 丁 and 庚. Gyeong combines with Eul and clashes with Gap; Jeong combines with Im and clashes with Gye. So the bond is purely the controlling relationship, which here happens to be a highly regarded one.
In love
Think of a partner who quietly makes the other better: suggests the course to take, edits the CV, notices the habit that keeps causing trouble. Jeong often plays that role. Gyeong tends to be loyal, protective and blunt. The friction comes when refining feels like criticism. Gyeong can hear Jeong's careful suggestions as nagging, and Jeong can feel Gyeong's bluntness as a lack of care.
At work
Mentor and talent, editor and writer, coach and athlete: this pairing fits any setup where one person shapes another's strength. A Jeong manager can get excellent work from a Gyeong report. Reverse it, and Gyeong may find Jeong a reliable conscience on its team.
Making it work
- Jeong: shape gently and in private. A forge works by steady heat, not by flare-ups.
- Gyeong: say thank you for the refining, even when it stung.
- Agree on areas where Gyeong decides alone.
This is a Day Master reading; Korean 궁합 (宮合, gunghap) practice compares the whole of both charts, including day branches (the spouse palace), element balance and luck pillars. See Jeong Yin Fire and Gyeong Yang Metal, the compatibility index, and the day pillar calculator.
