Byeong (丙) and Im (壬) are the sun and the open sea, two of the largest images among the ten stems. They clash formally, and Im holds a controlling position over Byeong, yet classical writers also admired the sight of sunlight on a great body of water. The result is a pairing of high tension and high attraction.

The elemental dynamic

The relation is Water controls Fire. Im, Yang Water, is the controlling side; Byeong, Yang Fire, is controlled. Both are Yang, so the polarity is the same, and same-polarity control is the forceful kind.

Here schools genuinely differ in emphasis. One reading stresses the conflict: water puts out fire, and two Yang stems facing each other fight directly. Another, found in classical seasonal manuals, praises the image of the sun shining on a great river or lake, where each makes the other brilliant. Many Saju readers hold both views and let the rest of the chart decide which dominates. If Byeong is strong, Im's pressure feels like a worthy challenge. If Byeong is weak, it can feel like being doused.

How each sees the other

Byeong sees Im as Seven Killings (칠살 七殺, chilsal). Im sees Byeong as Indirect Wealth (편재 偏財, pyeonjae).

Seven Killings is the hard-edged controlling star: pressure, competition, authority that tests you. Traditionally, for a woman it is a partner star, the intense alternative to Direct Officer, so a female Byeong with a male Im fits an old pattern of a demanding, compelling partner. In neutral terms, Byeong experiences Im as someone who will not simply be charmed, who pushes back and sets the terms.

Indirect Wealth is the star of opportunity and pursuit. For a man, the Wealth stars traditionally mark romantic partners, with Indirect Wealth linked to a lively, less conventional attachment. Neutrally, Im sees Byeong as an exciting prospect: bright, worth going after, slightly hard to hold.

Combination or clash

These two stems form the 丙壬沖, a stem clash (천간충 天干沖, cheongan-chung). Of the four recognised stem clashes (甲庚, 乙辛, 丙壬, 丁癸), this is the one between the largest Fire and the largest Water. There is no stem combination (천간합 天干合, cheongan-hap) between them.

A clash means direct opposition: two forces meeting head on. In a relationship it tends to show up as sharp disagreements, sudden changes and a sense that neither person can fully relax. It also means movement. Clashes break stagnation, and some couples describe this kind of bond as the one that made them grow fastest. Whether a clash reads as damaging or energising depends on the strength of each Day Master and on what the branches below are doing.

In love

Picture a couple who fall for each other quickly and then argue about everything from holiday plans to politics. Im thinks in big strategies; Byeong acts on big feelings. Both are proud, both are expansive, and neither backs down easily. When it works, the mutual respect is deep, because each knows the other is a match.

At work

A Byeong and Im team can be powerful in negotiations, launches or anything with scale, provided their domains are clearly separated. Put them in charge of the same decision and the clash surfaces quickly.

Making it work

A stem clash is notable but is not a verdict. Korean 궁합 (宮合, gunghap) compares both full charts, including the day branches (the spouse palace), overall element balance and luck pillars.
