Byeong (丙) and Gyeong (庚) Compatibility in Korean Saju: Sun and Steel
Byeong (丙) and Gyeong (庚) bring together the sun and raw steel. Byeong has influence over Gyeong, and Gyeong feels that pressure keenly, which makes this a charged, often magnetic pairing between two strong-willed people.
The elemental dynamic
The relation is Fire controls Metal: fire is what softens and reshapes metal. Byeong holds the controlling position. Both stems are Yang, so the polarity is the same, and same-polarity control in Saju tends to be blunt and forceful rather than polite.
There is a nuance classical writers enjoyed. Gyeong is unworked ore or a heavy blade, and what really shapes it is Jeong (丁), the focused forge flame. Byeong's sunlight warms Gyeong but cannot melt it into a tool. So Byeong's control here is real but broad: it heats, tests and challenges more than it refines. A Gyeong person may feel scrutinised by Byeong rather than shaped by them.
How each sees the other
Byeong sees Gyeong as Indirect Wealth (편재 偏財, pyeonjae). Gyeong sees Byeong as Seven Killings (칠살 七殺, chilsal, also called 편관 偏官, pyeongwan).
Indirect Wealth is the star of opportunity, risk and resources you go out and win. It is lively and a little restless. In traditional readings for a man, the Wealth stars stand for the wife and romantic partners, with Indirect Wealth often linked to a lover or a less formal attachment, as well as to the father. For anyone, the neutral sense is that Byeong sees Gyeong as a worthwhile challenge: someone to engage, win over and work with.
Seven Killings is the intense controlling star: pressure, discipline, rivals, authority that does not ask permission. Traditionally, for a woman Seven Killings is a husband or partner star, the bolder and more demanding counterpart to Direct Officer. The neutral sense is that Gyeong experiences Byeong as a force that pushes it hard. That can sharpen Gyeong into its best self, or it can feel like being under siege.

Combination or clash
There is no stem combination (천간합 天干合, cheongan-hap) and no stem clash (천간충 天干沖, cheongan-chung) between 丙 and 庚. The well-known stem clashes are 甲庚, 乙辛, 丙壬 and 丁癸; this pair is not among them. Tension here comes from the controlling relationship, not from a formal collision.
In love
Imagine two people who argue well and enjoy it. Gyeong is direct and principled; Byeong is direct and warm. Attraction often runs high because Seven Killings and Indirect Wealth are both energetic stars. The difficulty is that Byeong may push without realising how hard it lands, and Gyeong does not bend easily under pressure. Couples who do well tend to respect each other's stubbornness rather than try to win.
At work
Byeong can motivate and challenge a Gyeong colleague, and Gyeong often performs well under that heat. In a manager-report setup, a Byeong manager may get strong results from Gyeong, as long as the pressure is fair. Reverse it, with Gyeong managing Byeong, and Gyeong's bluntness meets Byeong's openness, which usually works fine.
Making it work
- Byeong: notice when encouragement has turned into pressure.
- Gyeong: say when the heat is too much, plainly and early.
- Pick battles. Two Yang stems can turn any small decision into a contest.
This is a Day Master reading only. In Korean 궁합 (宮合, gunghap), readers compare the whole of both charts: the day branches (the spouse palace), element balance and luck pillar timing. See Byeong Yang Fire and Gyeong Yang Metal, the full compatibility index, or the day pillar calculator.
FAQ
Does Byeong dominate Gyeong?
Fire controls Metal, so Byeong holds the controlling role, and Gyeong sees Byeong as Seven Killings. In practice that reads as strong pressure and challenge, not necessarily domination.
Is Byeong and Gyeong a romantic pairing in tradition?
The stars involved, Indirect Wealth and Seven Killings, are both classically linked to romantic partners, which is why this pairing is often described as magnetic. It is still only one layer of a compatibility reading.
Do Byeong and Gyeong clash?
Not formally. They form no stem clash and no stem combination; the friction comes from Fire controlling Metal.
