Jeong (丁) and Mu (戊) Compatibility in Korean Saju: Lamp in the Mountains
Jeong (丁) and Mu (戊) are a lamp and a mountain: a small, focused flame next to a vast, steady mass. Jeong pours warmth and sharp ideas into Mu; Mu experiences Jeong as genuine support. The scale difference shapes almost everything about this pairing.
The elemental dynamic
The relation is Fire produces Earth. Jeong is the source, Mu the receiver. The polarities differ: Jeong is Yin Fire, Mu is Yang Earth. Opposite-polarity generation tends to feel personal and well matched in tone.
Scale is the catch. A candle can warm a hut; it cannot warm a mountain. Classical texts warn that heavy Earth "smothers" or drains a small fire, and the image fits. Jeong may give a great deal and feel it disappear into Mu without much visible effect. On the other hand, a lamp in a mountain hut at night is one of the most reassuring images in the system: the mountain shelters the flame from the wind.
How each sees the other
Jeong sees Mu as Hurting Officer (상관 傷官, sanggwan). Mu sees Jeong as Direct Resource (정인 正印, jeongin).
Direct Resource is the dependable support star: the nurturing parent, the good teacher, the person who makes you feel safe to learn. For Mu, Jeong plays that role. It is classically the mother star, so traditional readers say Mu tends to feel "looked after" by Jeong, whatever their genders.
Hurting Officer is an expressive output star with an edge. It drives critique, performance and invention, and it chafes against rules and authority. Beside Mu, Jeong may become more outspoken, more inventive and more willing to argue. In old readings for a woman, Hurting Officer is a children star and also one that pressures the husband star, so classical manuals sometimes flag a strong Hurting Officer as hard on a marriage. The neutral reading: Mu brings out Jeong's clever, critical voice. That can be productive or wearing. See Hurting Officer and Direct Resource.
Combination or clash
There is no stem combination (천간합 天干合, cheongan-hap) and no stem clash (천간충 天干沖, cheongan-chung) between 丁 and 戊. Jeong combines with Im and clashes with Gye; Mu combines with Gye. Jeong and Mu are linked only through Fire producing Earth.
In love
One familiar version: Jeong does the remembering, the noticing, the planning of small surprises, while Mu provides calm, stability and a sense of home. Mu feels cared for. Jeong may feel its efforts are absorbed without much reply, and then express that through sharp, Hurting Officer-style comments. Mu tends to absorb those too, until it does not.
At work
Jeong as the critic or designer and Mu as the steady operator can be a good fit. Jeong finds the flaws and proposes fixes; Mu has the patience to implement them. Jeong should be careful about public criticism of a Mu manager; Mu is slow to anger and slow to forget.
Making it work
- Mu: reflect back what Jeong gives. A visible thank-you keeps the flame from feeling wasted.
- Jeong: give in measured amounts. Small fires last longer when they are not spent all at once.
- Channel the Hurting Officer energy into shared projects rather than into each other.
Day Masters are one layer of compatibility. Korean 궁합 (宮合, gunghap) compares both full charts: day branches (the spouse palace), element balance and luck pillars. See Jeong Yin Fire and Mu Yang Earth, the compatibility index, and the free day pillar calculator.
FAQ
Is Jeong supportive for a Mu Day Master?
Yes, in Ten Gods terms. Mu sees Jeong as Direct Resource, the steady support star, though Jeong's small flame may not be enough for a very Earth-heavy chart.
Why does Jeong see Mu as Hurting Officer?
Fire produces Earth, making Mu Jeong's output, and the two have opposite polarity. That combination is Hurting Officer.
Do Jeong and Mu combine?
No. Jeong's combination partner is Im and Mu's is Gye, so Jeong and Mu have neither a combination nor a clash.
