Jeong (丁) and Sin (辛) Compatibility in Korean Saju: Flame and Fine Jewel
Jeong (丁) and Sin (辛) put a concentrated flame next to a finished jewel. Jeong is drawn to Sin's refinement; Sin feels Jeong's heat as intense pressure. It is a close, charged pairing between two sensitive stems, and the heat has to be handled with care.
The elemental dynamic
The relation is Fire controls Metal. Jeong controls; Sin is controlled. Both are Yin, so the polarity is the same, and same-polarity control is the sharper, less regulated form.
Compare this to Jeong with Gyeong. Gyeong is raw ore, and a forge fire improves it. Sin is already finished: a cut gem, a fine needle, polished jewellery. Put a focused flame to a finished jewel and you risk damage rather than improvement. Classical texts read Jeong's heat on Sin with caution for exactly this reason. In people, Jeong's close attention and pointed comments may land on Sin as harsh, even when Jeong means them as interest or care.
How each sees the other
Jeong sees Sin as Indirect Wealth (편재 偏財, pyeonjae). Sin sees Jeong as Seven Killings (칠살 七殺, chilsal).
Indirect Wealth is the star of pursuit, opportunity and things that are exciting to win. Jeong tends to find Sin attractive and intriguing, a prize. In traditional readings for a man, the Wealth stars are the partner stars, and Indirect Wealth is linked with a lively, less settled attachment. Neutrally, Sin represents something Jeong wants to engage with and hold onto.
Seven Killings is the intense controlling star: pressure, challenge, a force that tests you. For a woman, tradition treats it as a partner star, the bolder alternative to Direct Officer. Neutrally, Sin feels Jeong as demanding, someone who pushes and examines. For a stem as image-conscious as Sin, that scrutiny can feel personal. See Indirect Wealth and Seven Killings.
Combination or clash
There is no stem combination (천간합 天干合, cheongan-hap) and no stem clash (천간충 天干沖, cheongan-chung) between 丁 and 辛. Sin's clash partner is Eul and its combination partner is Byeong; Jeong's are Gye and Im. The tension between Jeong and Sin comes entirely from Fire controlling Metal between two Yin stems.
In love
A typical scene: Jeong notices every detail of Sin's appearance, mood and words, and comments on them. Sin enjoys being noticed but bristles at being assessed. Attraction is often strong, since Indirect Wealth and Seven Killings are both energetic, romantic-leaning stars. Long-term ease depends on Jeong learning that admiration and critique sound different to Sin, and on Sin saying when it feels judged.
At work
Jeong as quality reviewer and Sin as craftsperson can produce excellent work, as long as feedback is structured and impersonal. Unstructured, it slides into friction quickly. Both stems are precise and both care about doing things well, which is common ground worth naming.
Making it work
- Jeong: lower the temperature of feedback. Praise first, specifics second.
- Sin: distinguish between Jeong's interest and Jeong's judgement; they often look alike.
- Build in cooling time after disagreements; Yin stems process slowly.
Keep in mind that Day Masters are one layer. Korean 궁합 (宮合, gunghap) practice looks at both full charts: day branches (the spouse palace), element balance and the luck pillars each person is in. See Jeong Yin Fire and Sin Yin Metal, browse the compatibility index, or use the day pillar calculator.
