Stem clash 沖

Jeong (丁) and Gye (癸) are a candle and the rain. Gye has direct power over Jeong, and the two stems also form a classical clash, so this is a pairing where small things can feel large. It is also intensely personal: two quiet, perceptive Yin stems who notice everything about each other.

The elemental dynamic

The relation is Water controls Fire: Gye controls, Jeong is controlled. Both are Yin, so the polarity is the same, and same-polarity control is the sharper kind.

The image is about scale and exposure. The sun can shrug off a passing shower; a candle cannot. Rain falling straight onto a small flame is exactly the situation in which that flame goes out. That is why classical texts treat Gye's effect on Jeong more seriously than its effect on Byeong. In human terms, Gye's cool, observant remarks can land on Jeong with more force than Gye intends.

Some readers add a balancing point. A Jeong person in an overheated chart may badly need some Water, and for them Gye's influence feels like relief. The strength of Jeong in its own chart decides which reading applies.

How each sees the other

Jeong sees Gye as Seven Killings (칠살 七殺, chilsal). Gye sees Jeong as Indirect Wealth (편재 偏財, pyeonjae).

Seven Killings is the pressure star: challenge, competition, authority that does not negotiate. For a woman, tradition counts it among the partner stars, the intense counterpart to Direct Officer, so a female Jeong with a male Gye fits the old picture of a compelling, demanding partner. Neutrally, Jeong experiences Gye as someone who tests and unsettles it.

Indirect Wealth is the star of pursuit and opportunity. For a man, the Wealth stars traditionally mark romantic partners, with Indirect Wealth linked to lively, less conventional ties. Neutrally, Gye sees Jeong as appealing and worth pursuing, though perhaps not something to hold tightly. See Seven Killings and Indirect Wealth.

Combination or clash

Jeong and Gye form the 丁癸沖, a stem clash (천간충 天干沖, cheongan-chung). It is one of four recognised stem clashes, alongside 甲庚, 乙辛 and 丙壬. There is no stem combination (천간합 天干合, cheongan-hap) between them.

A clash is direct opposition. Here it often shows up as emotional rather than loud: misread silences, conversations that go cold suddenly, a mood shift that one person notices and the other cannot explain. Clashes also bring movement, and some readers see a clash in the stems as a prompt for change in both people's lives. Whether this one bruises or energises depends heavily on the branches and the strength of each Day Master.

In love

Both stems are sensitive, and both read subtext. That makes for deep conversations and real intimacy, and also for arguments that are mostly about tone. Attraction tends to be strong; steadiness takes work. A Gye partner who keeps the observations kind, and a Jeong partner who asks rather than assumes, change the texture of this pairing considerably.

At work

Jeong and Gye can make an excellent analytical pair: research, investigation, writing, anything that rewards insight. Problems arise when Gye's critique, often accurate, arrives without warmth and Jeong takes it as a personal judgement.

Making it work

Remember this is one layer. Korean 궁합 (宮合, gunghap) compares both full charts: the day branches (the spouse palace), element balance and luck pillar timing. See Jeong Yin Fire and Gye Yin Water, the compatibility index, and the day pillar calculator.

FAQ

Do Jeong and Gye clash?

Yes. 丁癸 is one of the four stem clashes, so tradition reads the pairing as direct opposition, often felt in emotional and subtle ways.

Is Jeong and Gye always a difficult match?

No. A clash suggests friction and change, not a fixed outcome. If Jeong is strong or its chart is overheated, Gye's influence may even be welcome.

How do Jeong and Gye see each other in the Ten Gods?

Jeong sees Gye as Seven Killings, a source of pressure. Gye sees Jeong as Indirect Wealth, something attractive to pursue.
