Lone Star and Widow Star (고신살 · 과숙살) in Saju Explained
The Lone Star (고신살 孤辰 gosinsal) and Widow Star (과숙살 寡宿 gwasuksal) are a pair of stars traditionally associated with solitude, independence and emotional distance in close relationships. Both are found from your year branch using the four seasons. The names sound heavy, but modern readers treat them as markers of self-reliance rather than predictions about anyone's love life.
What it means
孤 means orphaned or alone; 寡 means widowed. In the classical tradition the Lone Star was read mainly in men's charts and the Widow Star in women's, both as a caution that a person might spend long stretches apart from family or a spouse. The modern reading changes the emphasis. These stars describe someone who is comfortable alone, needs personal space, keeps some emotional reserve, or builds a life with more independence than their family expected. That can suit careers involving long periods of focused or remote work, and relationships that respect each partner's space. Korean practice treats them as double-edged: the independence that serves one person well can feel like distance to another. Neither star decides whether someone marries or stays together.
How it is found
The rule groups the year branch by season, then looks at the branches on either side of that season.
- Winter years (Pig 亥, Rat 子, Ox 丑): Lone Star In 寅 (Tiger), Widow Star Sul 戌 (Dog).
- Spring years (Tiger 寅, Rabbit 卯, Dragon 辰): Lone Star Sa 巳 (Snake), Widow Star Chuk 丑 (Ox).
- Summer years (Snake 巳, Horse 午, Goat 未): Lone Star Sin 申 (Monkey), Widow Star Jin 辰 (Dragon).
- Autumn years (Monkey 申, Rooster 酉, Dog 戌): Lone Star Hae 亥 (Pig), Widow Star Mi 未 (Goat).
The Lone Star is the first branch after the season, and the Widow Star is the last branch before it.
Worked example: a person born in a Horse year belongs to the summer group, so their Lone Star is Sin 申 and their Widow Star is Jin 辰. If their day branch is the Monkey, as in the Gyeong-sin day pillar, the Lone Star sits in the spouse palace.
Orienteller's engine checks both stars for every chart, regardless of gender, and marks each pillar where the branch appears. Readers who follow the older split will only read the Lone Star for men and the Widow Star for women.
How it shows up in a reading
Placement matters most. On the day branch, readers describe a partner who values independence or a relationship that works best with breathing room. In the month pillar, the star is often read as a career that involves working alone or away from home. In the year pillar, it is read as early independence; in the hour pillar, as a self-sufficient later life.
Interactions shift the tone. A harmony that binds the branch to another is read as solitude softened by connection. A clash is read as periods of separation followed by change. Readers also check the Ten Gods for partnership and the strength of the Day Master, since a self-reliant Day Master and a Lone Star simply describe the same independence twice.
Related stars include the Canopy Star, which also leans toward solitude, and Yin-Yang Mismatch. Check your branches with the free day pillar calculator, and see all terms in the glossary.
FAQ
Does 고신살 mean I will never marry?
No. It is a traditional marker of independence and emotional reserve. Marriage questions are read from the whole chart, not from one star.
What is the difference between the Lone Star and the Widow Star?
They come from the same season rule, on opposite sides of the season. Tradition read the Lone Star for men and the Widow Star for women; Orienteller reports both for everyone.
Can these stars be softened?
Readers say harmonies, helper stars and a balanced chart soften them. Many people with these stars have close, lasting relationships.
