Samjae (삼재): Which Zodiac Signs Have It, and What It Means

Samjae (삼재 三災 samjae, "three calamities") is a three-year period that comes around every twelve years for each birth-year animal. Korean folk tradition treats it as a time to be careful and conservative, and it is one of the most searched Saju terms in Korea every January. In 2026 (a Horse year), people born in Pig, Rabbit or Goat years are in the middle year of their Samjae.

What it means

The "three calamities" of old texts were natural and social troubles of a farming world, and the custom grew into a broad sense that some years ask for more caution than others. Temples still sell Samjae charms (부적 bujeok) and offer rituals, and many families mark the dates on the calendar.

Practitioners are more measured. Samjae is a property of the calendar and your birth-year animal only, so everyone born in the same group enters it at once: about a quarter of the population at any time. That alone shows it cannot describe individual fate. Korean folk practice even distinguishes a "blessed Samjae" (복삼재 boksamjae), when the years bring good fortune, from a harder one (악삼재 aksamjae), and decides which by looking at the full chart. The sensible reading is a reminder to plan carefully, not a forecast.

How it is found

Samjae comes from your birth-year branch and its triple frame (삼합 三合 samhap). Each frame has three consecutive years of Samjae, read as entering (들삼재 deulsamjae), middle (눌삼재 nulsamjae) and leaving (날삼재 nalsamjae).

• Monkey, Rat or Dragon birth years: Samjae in Tiger, Rabbit and Dragon years.
• Tiger, Horse or Dog birth years: Monkey, Rooster and Dog years.
• Snake, Rooster or Ox birth years: Pig, Rat and Ox years.
• Pig, Rabbit or Goat birth years: Snake, Horse and Goat years.

Worked example: someone born in a Rabbit year is in Samjae in 2025 (Snake, entering), 2026 (Horse, middle) and 2027 (Goat, leaving). For a Tiger-year person the next run is 2028, 2029 and 2030. For a Monkey, Rat or Dragon person, 2024 was the leaving year, and the next run starts in 2034.

The relevant birth year is the Saju year, which begins at Ipchun (입춘 立春), around February 4, not on January 1. If you were born in January or early February, check your year animal with the birth time and place guide. Folk practice differs on whether the Samjae year itself turns at Lunar New Year or at Ipchun.

How it shows up in a reading

A practitioner never reads Samjae on its own. The first question is what the year's pillar does to your chart: which Ten Gods it brings, whether its branch clashes or harmonizes with your branches, and how it fits your current 10-year luck pillar. A Samjae year whose element your chart needs is often read as a blessed Samjae; one that clashes your day branch is read as a year for steadier choices.

The three phases also carry different weight in folk practice. Many people treat the entering year as the one to start cautiously and the leaving year as the one to wrap things up rather than launch. Readers who look for practical advice tend to suggest postponing optional big risks, not cancelling life.
