Heaven Virtue (천덕귀인 天德貴人 cheondeok gwiin) is a protective noble star found by comparing your birth month with the stems in your chart. Tradition links it to a gentle, decent temperament and to the sense that problems soften before they become serious. It is often paired with its sibling, the Moon Virtue.

What it means

The word 德 deok means virtue or moral credit. Old manuals say a person with Heaven Virtue "meets danger and is rescued," and that harsh stars elsewhere in the chart lose some of their edge. Korean readers often describe it as a character star more than a luck star: kindness, fairness and a reputation that makes people willing to give you the benefit of the doubt.

Read in a modern way, it suggests resilience built on goodwill: a mild buffer, not a shield against hard periods.

How it is found

Unlike the Heavenly Noble, which starts from the Day Master, Heaven Virtue starts from the month branch. Each of the twelve months points to one character, and the star is present when that character appears among the stems of your four pillars.

Worked example: someone born in an In 寅 (Tiger) month looks for Jeong 丁. If Jeong appears as the year, month, day or hour stem, the chart carries Heaven Virtue in that pillar. Born in a Mi 未 (Goat) month, the target is Gap 甲; born in a Chuk 丑 (Ox) month, it is Gyeong 庚.

There is one wrinkle worth knowing. In four months (Myo 卯 Rabbit, O 午 Horse, Yu 酉 Rooster and Ja 子 Rat) the classical rule names a branch rather than a stem: Sin 申, Hae 亥, In 寅 and Sa 巳 respectively. In those months the star is present when that branch appears among the chart's branches. Calculators that compare against stems only will never show Heaven Virtue for these four months, which is one reason results differ between sites. The engine also checks the related "Heaven Virtue harmony" (天德合), a stem that combines with the Heaven Virtue stem.

How it shows up in a reading

Because it is anchored on the month, Heaven Virtue is often read as a quality of your upbringing and working environment. Where the matching stem sits adds detail. On the year stem it is linked with family reputation; on the month stem, with the career setting; on the day stem, with your own character, which is the position readers value most; on the hour stem, with later life and the people who follow you.

Readers then look at how that stem behaves. A stem that is combined away into another element, or attacked by a controlling stem, is said to give weaker protection. A stem that also plays a useful Ten Gods role for the Day Master is read as doubly helpful. Many Korean practitioners hold that Heaven Virtue and Moon Virtue together soften stars such as White Tiger or Sharp Edge, though they would never call the softening complete.

FAQ

What does Heaven Virtue mean in Saju?

It is a noble star that tradition links to protection in difficulty, a kind temperament and good reputation. It works as a softener rather than a guarantee.

Why does my chart not show Heaven Virtue when another site does?

For the Rabbit, Horse, Rooster and Rat months the classical target is a branch, not a stem. Tools that only compare stems miss it in those months, and schools also differ on whether the related Heaven Virtue harmony (天德合) counts.

Is Heaven Virtue stronger than Moon Virtue?

Most manuals rank Heaven Virtue slightly higher, but both are read as similar in kind. Having both is the combination readers mention most often.
