Mu (戊) and Sin (辛) Saju Compatibility: The Mountain and Its Jewel
Mu (戊, Yang Earth) and Sin (辛, Yin Metal) are a nurturing pair. The mountain holds and feeds the jewel, and the jewel gives the mountain something worth showing. Mu tends to give support, Sin tends to receive it, and in Sin's company Mu often becomes sharper and more expressive than usual.
The elemental dynamic
The relation is Earth produces Metal (토생금, 土生金, to-saeng-geum). Picture ore forming inside a large rock face over a long time: Mu is the mass and the pressure, Sin is the small, finished gem that comes out of it. Mu is Yang and Sin is Yin, so the polarities are opposite. Classical writers treat opposite polarity as the softer, more complementary version of any relation, which is why the Ten Gods between them are the "direct" or refined kind rather than the blunt ones.
There is an old warning attached to this image as well: 土多金埋 (to-da-geum-mae), "too much earth buries metal." A mountain that keeps piling on care can hide the jewel instead of revealing it. That single phrase describes the main risk of the pairing better than any list.
How each sees the other
The Ten Gods (십신, 十神, sipsin) describe what one Day Master represents to the other.
- Mu sees Sin as Hurting Officer (상관, 傷官, sanggwan). This is Mu's output star of opposite polarity: talent, performance, wit and a habit of questioning rules. Around Sin, the usually steady Mu may talk more, critique more and want to show what it can do.
- Sin sees Mu as Direct Resource (정인, 正印, jeongin). This is the star of support, learning, shelter and patience. Sin tends to feel protected and taught by Mu.
In traditional gendered reading, Direct Resource is the mother star for both men and women, so Sin may experience Mu as almost parental care. For a woman, the output stars (Eating God and Hurting Officer) are classically the child stars, and Hurting Officer is famous for challenging the husband star; a female Mu may treat Sin a little like a project she is raising. The neutral reading is simpler: Mu expresses itself through Sin, and Sin rests on Mu. See Hurting Officer and Direct Resource for the full meanings.
Combination or clash
Neither. Mu's combination (합, 合, hap) partner is Gye and Sin's is Byeong, so this pair has no stem combination. They also form none of the four stem clashes (충, 沖, chung): 甲庚, 乙辛, 丙壬, 丁癸. Without 合 there is no built-in "pull" that makes the bond feel fated, and without 沖 there is no head-on friction. The connection runs on the generating cycle alone, which usually means it grows slowly and feels more like steady care than sudden chemistry.
In love
Mu brings reliability, a calm home base and long patience. Sin brings refinement, taste and a precise eye that notices what Mu overlooks. The usual friction is that Mu's Hurting Officer side comes out as unsolicited correction, while Sin, sensitive to scratches like any polished stone, takes it personally. Sin may also lean on Mu so comfortably that Mu begins to feel used as furniture.
At work
This is a natural patron and specialist arrangement: a founder who funds a designer, an editor backing a writer, a workshop owner and a fine craftsperson. Mu supplies room, budget and time; Sin delivers the polished result. Credit sharing needs attention, since Mu's Hurting Officer wants recognition too.
Making it work
- Mu: offer support without burying. Ask before advising.
- Sin: say thank you out loud, and show Mu the finished work it made possible.
- Both: give Sin space to shine on its own terms.
Day Master compatibility is only one layer. Korean 궁합 (宮合, gunghap, chart matching) compares the whole charts: the day branches (the spouse palace), the overall element balance, and the timing of each person's luck pillars. Two people with the same Day Masters can match very differently. You can read the wider pairings on the compatibility index or find your own Day Master with the free calculator.
FAQ
Is Mu and Sin a good match in Saju?
It is generally read as supportive, because Earth produces Metal and the Ten Gods involved are the refined, direct kind. The common risk is over-protection by Mu, so the outcome depends on the full charts and on the people.
Why does Mu see Sin as Hurting Officer?
Mu is Earth, Earth produces Metal, and Sin has the opposite polarity to Mu. In Ten God terms that combination is Hurting Officer, the expressive and rule-testing output star.
Do Mu and Sin form a stem combination?
No. Mu combines with Gye and Sin combines with Byeong, so these two have no 合 between them and no clash either.
