Saju Luck Pillars: 10-Year Daeun and Annual Seun Explained

Luck pillars are the moving part of a Saju chart. Every person has a sequence of 10-year luck pillars (대운 大運 daeun), each a stem-and-branch pair that colors a decade of life, and every calendar year has its own annual pillar (세운 歲運 seun) that applies to everyone. A reader compares these changing pillars with the fixed birth chart to describe the timing of easier and harder periods.

Why a chart needs timing

The four birth pillars describe a fixed structure: which elements are strong, which are thin and what the Day Master needs. Life is not static, though. Luck pillars introduce new stems and branches over time, and those characters interact with the birth chart through the same Five Elements and Ten Gods relationships. When a decade brings an element the chart needs, readers describe it as supportive; when it piles on an element the chart already has too much of, as demanding.

How 10-year luck pillars are built

Luck pillars are derived from your month pillar. They step through the 60-cycle one pair at a time, either forward or backward. Two things must be determined: the direction and the starting age.

Direction: forward or backward

Direction depends on your gender and on the polarity of your year stem. Yang year stems are Gap 甲, Byeong 丙, Mu 戊, Gyeong 庚 and Im 壬; Yin year stems are Eul 乙, Jeong 丁, Gi 己, Sin 辛 and Gye 癸.

YinBackwardForward

For example, if the month pillar is 丙寅 Byeong-in and the sequence runs forward, the luck pillars are 丁卯 Jeong-myo, 戊辰 Mu-jin, 己巳 Gi-sa and so on. Running backward, they are 乙丑 Eul-chuk, 甲子 Gap-ja, 癸亥 Gye-hae and so on.

The binary gender rule comes from classical texts. Practitioners differ on how to handle nonbinary people; some offer both directions for comparison.

Starting age: counted from the solar terms

The first luck pillar does not start at birth. To find when it starts, the reader counts the time from birth to the nearest month-starting solar term (절 節 jeol, one of the twelve terms that begin the Saju months):

The traditional conversion is that three days equal one year. So 15 days to the next term gives a start age of about 5, and the luck pillars change at roughly 5, 15, 25, 35 and so on. Leftover days convert at one day to four months, which some readers keep and others round. Because this depends on the exact time of the solar term, Orienteller computes the terms astronomically rather than from a printed table.

Korean practitioners usually quote the start as a single number (대운수 大運數 daeunsu), from 1 to 10. Before the first luck pillar begins, the chart is read mainly from the month pillar itself.

Reading a 10-year luck pillar

A luck pillar has a stem and a branch. A common rule of thumb says the stem is more visible in the first five years and the branch in the last five, though many readers treat the whole decade as one unit and give the branch more weight, since it carries the season. Readers then ask:

A decade bringing Direct Officer to a well-supported Day Master, for example, is often read as a period of formal responsibility and recognition. The same Direct Officer arriving for an already pressured Day Master may be read as heavy obligations.

Annual pillars (세운)

Every year has a pillar from the same 60-cycle, beginning at 입춘 (立春 Ipchun), around February 4. Annual pillars are shared by everyone, but their meaning depends on each person's chart and current luck pillar. Readers layer them: the birth chart sets the structure, the 10-year pillar sets the climate of the decade, and the annual pillar adds the weather of the year. Some readers go further with monthly pillars (월운 月運 wolun).

2027丁未Jeong-miYin Fire Goat
2028戊申Mu-sinYang Earth Monkey

2026: the Byeong-o year

2026 is 丙午 Byeong-o, the Yang Fire Horse year, running from Ipchun on about February 4, 2026, to Ipchun in early February 2027. Both the stem Byeong 丙 and the branch O 午 are Fire, so this is a year of concentrated Fire. In general terms, charts that need warmth or expression tend to find it supportive, while charts already full of Fire, or with a Metal Day Master under pressure, may experience more intensity.

How it applies to you depends on your Day Master. For a Byeong Fire Day Master, Byeong is a Friend; for Gyeong Metal, it is Seven Killings; for Mu Earth, Indirect Resource; for Gap Wood, Eating God. The branch O 午 also clashes with Ja 子, so readers pay attention when Ja appears in a birth chart.

Keeping timing in perspective

Luck pillars describe shifts in conditions, not guaranteed events. A "difficult" period can be productive and a "favorable" one can pass quietly. Saju is not a substitute for medical, legal or financial advice, and decisions are best made on their own merits, with the chart as one input for reflection. FAQ

What is daeun in Saju?

Daeun (대운) is the 10-year luck pillar in Saju. It is a stem-and-branch pair derived from the month pillar that changes every ten years and describes the conditions of that decade in relation to the birth chart.

How is the luck pillar direction determined?

Direction depends on gender and the polarity of the year stem. A male born in a Yang year or a female born in a Yin year moves forward through the 60-cycle; a male born in a Yin year or a female born in a Yang year moves backward.

How is the starting age of luck pillars calculated?

Count the days from birth to the next month-starting solar term (forward) or back to the previous one (backward), then divide by three. Each three days equals one year of starting age.

What is the Saju pillar for 2026?

2026 is the 丙午 Byeong-o year, the Yang Fire Horse. It begins at Ipchun around February 4, 2026, and both its stem and branch are Fire.
