Gi (己) and Gye (癸) Compatibility: Field and Drizzle in Korean Saju
Gi (己, Yin Earth) and Gye (癸, Yin Water) are a quiet but lopsided pair. Gye is drizzle and Gi is the field that soaks it up. Gi finds Gye appealing and useful; Gye can feel absorbed, pressed and gradually changed by Gi, even when nobody raises their voice.
A note before the details: Day Master compatibility is one layer. Korean 궁합 (宮合, gunghap) compares whole charts, looking at the day branches (each person's spouse palace), the balance of the five elements, and the luck pillars each person is moving through. The Day Master pairing describes the basic chemistry; the rest of the chart decides how loudly it plays.
The elemental dynamic
Earth controls Water (토극수, 土剋水). Gi is soft farmland; Gye is fine rain, mist and morning dew. When drizzle falls on a ploughed field, it disappears into the soil within minutes. That is the shape of the control here: absorption rather than a wall.
Both stems are Yin, so the polarity is the same. In Ten God logic, same-polarity control produces the "indirect" or unbuffered roles. Between two Yin stems, though, it rarely looks dramatic. The pressure is subtle, slow and often unspoken, which can make it harder to notice than the loud version between two Yang stems.
How each sees the other
- Gi sees Gye as Indirect Wealth (편재, 偏財, pyeonjae). Indirect Wealth is the star of opportunity, generosity, flexible resources and things that come and go. Gye looks to Gi like refreshment: something enjoyable that makes its field productive.
- Gye sees Gi as Seven Killings (칠살, 七殺, chilsal). Seven Killings is pressure, challenge, discipline and authority without cushioning. For Gye, Gi can feel like a steady force that shapes and limits, even when Gi means only to help.
In tradition, Indirect Wealth for a man is the father star and in many readings a romantic partner outside convention; Seven Killings for a woman is classically the intense husband or lover star. So a Gi man and Gye woman reads, in the old texts, as attraction with a strong element of pressure on her side. Reverse the genders and the roles become money and opportunity for a Gi woman, and challenge or career pressure for a Gye man. Neutrally, Gi enjoys and uses Gye's freshness, and Gye feels tested by Gi. Read Indirect Wealth and Seven Killings.
Combination or clash
Neither. Gi's combination (합, 合, hap) partner is Gap, and Gye's is Mu, the Yang Earth stem. That detail matters: Gye bonds with big mountain earth, not with Gi's field, so there is no 合 here. As for clashes (충, 沖, chung), Gye clashes with Jeong Fire (丁癸), not with Gi. With neither feature present, everything rests on the control cycle, which means the dynamic is consistent and gradual rather than sudden.
In love
Gi is attentive, practical and protective. Gye is perceptive, imaginative and emotionally fine-tuned. Early on, Gye can feel deeply cared for. Later, Gye may notice that its plans keep turning into Gi's plans. Gi rarely notices it is doing this. Gentle check-ins work better here than big confrontations, which neither partner enjoys.
At work
Good for a manager and a researcher or analyst, or a producer and a creative consultant. Gi turns Gye's ideas into something that ships. Gye should keep ownership of its ideas in writing.
Making it work
- Gi: ask before absorbing, and leave Gye's projects visibly Gye's.
- Gye: speak plainly when pressure builds, before it turns into quiet withdrawal.
- Both: protect time apart, since drizzle needs sky as well as ground.

FAQ
Why does Gye feel pressure from Gi?
Gi is Earth, Earth controls Water, and both stems are Yin, which makes Gi Gye's Seven Killings. That star describes unbuffered pressure and challenge.
Do Gi and Gye form a stem combination?
No. Gye combines with Mu, the Yang Earth stem, and Gi combines with Gap. There is no clash between them either.
Is this a good match?
It can be steady and caring. The common risk is Gye feeling absorbed over time, so it helps when the rest of each chart gives Gye strength.
