Eul (乙) and Gye (癸) Compatibility in Saju: Dew on the Morning Grass
Eul (을 乙) Yin Wood and Gye (계 癸) Yin Water are dew on morning grass. Water produces Wood and both stems are Yin, so the nourishment is soft, close and steady. Eul sees Gye as Indirect Resource, an intuitive, unconventional support, and Gye sees Eul as Eating God, a pleasant, easy outlet for its care. This is one of the gentlest pairings among the Day Masters, and its main need is sunlight from outside.
The elemental dynamic
Gye is rain, mist and dew: fine water that soaks in slowly. Eul is grass, herbs and flowers. Fine water on fine plants is an ideal physical fit. Classical seasonal manuals often list Gye among Eul's most useful stems, alongside Byeong, the sun. Rain helps the plant grow, and sun lets it bloom.
That pairing points to this relationship's soft spot. Two Yin stems with no Fire between them can feel like a garden in a long rainy season: green and quiet, but cool and slow to flower. Both people may turn inward together. The pair tends to do best when one or both charts carry some Fire, or when shared life includes warmth, activity and other people.
How each sees the other
Eul sees Gye as Indirect Resource (편인 偏印 pyeonin). Indirect Resource is the producing element in the same polarity: intuition, specialised knowledge, private reflection, and in the classical six relations the stepmother star. Eul tends to receive Gye's support in subtle forms: a perceptive comment, an unusual book, a sense of being understood without many words. The classical caution about Indirect Resource is that it can make a person withdrawn or overthinking, so Eul may become more reflective, and occasionally more brooding, around Gye.
Gye sees Eul as Eating God (식신 食神 siksin). Eating God is the produced element in the same polarity: easy output, creativity, comfort, good food and enjoyment. In a woman's chart it was the classical children star, so older texts describe Gye's care for Eul in nurturing terms. Neutrally, Eul gives Gye a relaxed way to express itself. Gye, often private, may become more playful and generous in this relationship.
Combination or clash
There is no stem combination and no stem clash between Eul and Gye. Eul's combination partner is Gyeong (庚), and Gye's is Mu (戊). Eul clashes with Sin (辛) and Gye with Jeong (丁). The bond runs purely on the producing cycle, smooth and undramatic, with no 合 pull and no 沖 shocks.
In love
Tender, attentive and low in conflict. Gye anticipates Eul's needs; Eul makes Gye feel useful and appreciated. The risk is stagnation: shared moodiness, avoidance of hard conversations, or a home life so quiet that neither notices it has stopped growing. Planned outings and new experiences go a long way.
At work
Strong in research, counselling, writing and design: work that rewards insight and patience. They may need a more outgoing colleague to pitch their ideas and set deadlines.
Making it work
- Add Fire to shared life: activity, social plans, projects with visible results.
- Eul: share what Gye's support means to you in plain words. Indirect Resource help is easy to overlook.
- Gye: speak directly about your own needs, not only Eul's.
Day Master compatibility is one layer of a fuller reading. Korean compatibility practice (궁합 宮合 gunghap) compares both whole charts, especially the day branches (the spouse palace), element balance and luck pillar timing.
