Eul (乙) and Gi (己) Compatibility in Korean Saju: Roots in the Garden Bed
Eul (을 乙) Yin Wood and Gi (기 己) Yin Earth are fine roots spreading through a garden bed. Wood controls Earth and both stems are Yin, so the control is close-range and persistent rather than loud. Eul sees Gi as Indirect Wealth, fertile ground full of possibility, and Gi sees Eul as Seven Killings, a pressure that keeps working its way in. The pairing tends to be absorbing, productive and sometimes wearing for Gi.
The elemental dynamic
Gi is cultivated soil: fields, garden plots, potting earth. Eul is grass, herbs, creeping plants. Yin Wood in Yin Earth is a near-perfect physical match; roots spread easily and fast. That ease is the point and the problem. A garden full of plants is productive. A garden overrun by one creeping plant leaves no room for anything else.
Because the polarities match, this is the "indirect" or unbalanced form of control. Classical readers call same-polarity control more forceful than opposite-polarity control, because nothing in the pairing pulls back the other way. Among Yin stems, though, that force shows up as steady encroachment rather than a dramatic strike.
How each sees the other
Eul sees Gi as Indirect Wealth (편재 偏財 pyeonjae). Indirect Wealth is the element you control in the same polarity: opportunity, flexible resources, deal-making, enterprise. In the six-relations system it is the father star, and in a man's chart some classical texts read it as a lover or a partner outside formal marriage. Neutrally, Eul experiences Gi as generous and full of potential, someone it can grow alongside and draw from.
Gi sees Eul as Seven Killings (칠살 七殺 chilsal). Seven Killings is the element that controls you in the same polarity: pressure, competition, challenge, authority without softness. In a woman's chart it is a classical husband or lover star, typically described as exciting and hard to manage. Neutrally, Gi may feel that Eul is always asking a little more, through small requests and steady persuasion. That can toughen Gi, push it to set boundaries and help it get things done, or it can leave Gi feeling depleted.
Combination or clash
There is no stem combination and no stem clash between Eul and Gi. Gi's combination partner is Gap (甲), Eul's big Yang Wood sibling, while Eul combines with Gyeong (庚). Earth stems such as Gi are not part of the four stem clashes. So the pressure here is the controlling cycle working on its own, without the bond of a 合 or the sharp break of a 沖.
In love
Often comfortable and physically close at first. Gi gives easily; Eul flourishes. The longer-term question is reciprocity. If Eul takes Gi's patience as unlimited, Gi can quietly empty out. If Gi learns to say no, the pressure usually turns productive, and Eul tends to respect it.
At work
Eul is the grower, the salesperson or networker who expands things. Gi is the base that keeps operations, finances or people looked after. Expect Eul to push for more and Gi to absorb the consequences unless workloads are explicit.
Making it work
- Gi: set boundaries early. Seven Killings softens when it meets a clear limit.
- Eul: notice how much you draw from Gi and give back in kind.
- Fire in either chart, produced by Wood and producing Earth, turns the pressure into a supply chain: Eul feeds Fire, Fire feeds Gi.
Day Master compatibility is a single layer. Korean compatibility practice (궁합 宮合 gunghap) compares whole charts, especially the day branches (the spouse palace), element balance and luck pillar timing.
