Peach Blossom (도화살) in Saju: Meaning and How to Find It
Peach Blossom (도화살 桃花煞 dohwasal) is the Saju star of charm, attraction and visibility. It falls on one of the four "cardinal" branches, Rat, Rabbit, Horse or Rooster, and is found by checking your chart against your year branch. It is probably the most searched star in Korean Saju, and in recent years its reputation has turned from a warning into something close to a compliment.
What it means
The peach blossom image is spring: bright, noticeable and drawing people in. In classical texts the star describes someone others find attractive, and older moralizing manuals warned that it could lead to scandal or romantic trouble. In the twelve-star system it is formally called 년살 (年殺 nyeonsal).
Modern Korean readers see it very differently. Peach Blossom now signals likability, stage presence and the ability to draw attention, which suits performers, salespeople, designers, teachers, creators and anyone whose work depends on people wanting to look and listen. That is why it is often called the entertainer's star in Korean.
It is still double-edged: the quality that wins clients can complicate relationships if the chart lacks restraint. The star alone never decides anything about someone's love life.
How it is found
Take the year branch and find its triple frame (삼합 三合 samhap), the group of three branches that combine into one element. Each frame has one Peach Blossom branch, and the star is present wherever that branch appears in your chart.
- Monkey 申, Rat 子 or Dragon 辰 year: Peach Blossom is Yu 酉 (Rooster).
- Tiger 寅, Horse 午 or Dog 戌 year: it is Myo 卯 (Rabbit).
- Snake 巳, Rooster 酉 or Ox 丑 year: it is O 午 (Horse).
- Pig 亥, Rabbit 卯 or Goat 未 year: it is Ja 子 (Rat).
Worked example: someone born in a Tiger year has Peach Blossom on Myo 卯. If their day branch is Rabbit, as in the Gye-myo day pillar, the star sits on the spouse palace.
Orienteller's engine uses the year branch as the base. Many Korean practitioners also check from the day branch, and some give the day-branch result more weight, so you may see Peach Blossom reported on other sites when it does not appear here, or the reverse.
How it shows up in a reading
Position changes the story. In the year or month pillar it is read as charm that shows in public and at work. On the day branch it is read as personal magnetism and an attractive partner. In the hour pillar it is read as charm that grows with age or shows through creative output. Some older texts split Peach Blossom into "inside the wall" and "outside the wall" by pillar, a moral distinction modern readers rarely stress.
A clash on the branch (Myo 卯 against Yu 酉, for example) is read as relationships with ups and downs. A combination can tie the charm to a stable setting. The Ten Gods on that branch matter too: Peach Blossom on an Eating God reads as artistic charm, on a Wealth star as commercial appeal.
Luck and annual pillars bring it too. In the 2026 Horse year, people born in Snake, Rooster or Ox years meet their Peach Blossom branch in the year itself; the luck pillars guide explains how timing works. FAQ
Is 도화살 bad?
No. Older texts treated it as a risk, but modern Korean practice reads it mainly as charm and visibility. How it plays out depends on the rest of the chart.
Does Peach Blossom mean I will cheat or have many partners?
No. It describes attractiveness and social pull, not behavior. Relationship patterns are read from the whole chart, especially the Ten Gods.
Should I check Peach Blossom from my year branch or my day branch?
Both conventions exist. Orienteller uses the year branch; many Korean readers also look from the day branch, so it is reasonable to check both.
