The twelve stars (십이신살)

The Saddle Star (반안살 攀鞍煞 banansal) is a favorable star in the twelve-star system, associated with steady advancement, comfort and the rewards of position. It falls on the branch just after the General Star, and like the rest of the twelve stars it is found from your year branch. Readers treat it as a calm, supportive influence rather than a dramatic one.

What it means

攀鞍 means "climbing into the saddle." The picture is a general mounting a horse after the battle is won: the moment authority turns into status and ease. Classical texts link the star to promotion, good standing, a respected position and a life that becomes more comfortable over time. Orienteller's engine grades it as auspicious.

A modern reading frames it as consolidation. Where the General Star is about taking charge, the Saddle Star is about holding a position well: being trusted, building seniority, enjoying the stability of earned rank. Some readers also connect it with good timing for property, settling down or long-term commitments. None of this happens because of the star alone; it is a gentle tilt, and many charts with it have ordinary, uneven careers.

How it is found

Find the triple frame (삼합 三合 samhap) of your year branch. The Saddle Star is the branch immediately after the frame's central branch.

Worked example: someone born in a Monkey, Rat or Dragon year belongs to the Water frame, whose central branch is Ja 子. The next branch is Chuk 丑, so the Saddle Star is the Ox. If their hour branch is Chuk, the star sits in the hour pillar, which readers link with comfort in later life. The other frames give Mi 未 (Goat) for Tiger, Horse or Dog years, Sul 戌 (Dog) for Snake, Rooster or Ox years, and Jin 辰 (Dragon) for Pig, Rabbit or Goat years.

So the Saddle Star always falls on a "storage" branch, Ox, Goat, Dog or Dragon, the same set of branches as the Canopy Star but never on the same branch for a given frame.

Orienteller uses the year branch as the base. Many Korean practitioners also run the twelve stars from the day branch, which may add the Saddle Star to a chart where the year-based method does not show it.

How it shows up in a reading

The Saddle Star works best when it is stable. Storage branches clash in pairs (Ox with Goat, Dragon with Dog), and a clash on the Saddle branch, whether in the birth chart or from a luck pillar, is read as a shake-up of an established position: a reorganization, a move, a change of role. A harmony on the branch is read as a position that settles in.

Placement follows the usual pattern. Month-pillar Saddle Stars point to advancement at work; a day-branch Saddle Star suggests a partner who adds stability; in the year pillar, a comfortable family base; in the hour pillar, ease in later years.

Readers also check the Ten Gods. A Saddle Star holding the Direct Officer or a Resource star fits the classical picture of promotion and recognition. One holding a Wealth star leans toward material comfort. Timing through the luck pillars matters: a decade that brings the Saddle branch is often described as a period of consolidation. FAQ

Is 반안살 good or bad?

It is graded as a favorable star, linked with steady advancement and comfort. Like any star, it is weighed against the rest of the chart.

How is the Saddle Star different from the General Star?

The General Star is about taking command; the Saddle Star is about the stable position that follows. They sit on neighboring branches in the same frame.

Does the Saddle Star mean I will be promoted?

It points to a tendency toward steady advancement. Actual promotions depend on many factors, including timing, effort and the Officer stars in your chart.
