The twelve stars (십이신살)

The General Star (장성살 將星煞 jangseongsal) is the twelve-star system's mark of leadership, authority and the ability to take charge. It sits on the central branch of your year branch's triple frame, which is always Rat, Horse, Rooster or Rabbit. Despite the 살 (sal, "harsh star") suffix in its Korean name, most readers count it among the favorable stars.

What it means

將星 means "general's star," and the image is a commander at the center of the camp. Classical texts describe people with this star as decisive, dignified and able to hold a group together. Orienteller's engine grades it as auspicious within the twelve-star system.

There is a reason it still carries the 살 suffix. Authority has costs, and older readers warned that a strong General Star in an already forceful chart could tip into stubbornness or friction with superiors. In a woman's chart, older manuals even treated it as a difficulty, a view rooted in expectations about gender that modern readers set aside. Today it is read as presence and the capacity to lead, which can show up in management, coaching, military or public service, team sports or simply being the person others turn to in a crisis.

How it is found

Every branch belongs to one triple frame (삼합 三合 samhap), a set of three branches that combine into one element. The middle branch of each frame is its peak, where the element is at full strength, and that branch is the General Star.

Worked example: someone born in a Snake year looks for Yu 酉. If their day pillar is Gye-yu, the General Star sits on the day branch, which readers read as a personal, self-directed kind of authority. Anyone born in a Rat, Horse, Rooster or Rabbit year carries the star in their own year pillar.

Orienteller uses the year branch as the base, following the classical twelve-star method. Many Korean practitioners also check from the day branch, and the two methods can give different results.

How it shows up in a reading

The General Star is strongest when it is uncontested. Because the four central branches clash in pairs (Rat with Horse, Rabbit with Rooster), the opposing branch is a direct challenge. That opposing branch is also the Disaster Star for the same frame, so a General Star facing its own clash is read as leadership tested by competition or rivals.

Placement shapes the role. In the month pillar readers expect leadership at work; in the year pillar, a commanding family figure or early responsibility; in the hour pillar, authority that grows later or a strong-willed child. The Ten Gods on the branch refine it: a General Star holding the Seven Killings star is classic command under pressure, while one holding the Direct Officer suggests rule-based, institutional authority.

The next branch in the cycle is the Saddle Star, often read as the reward that follows leadership. Find your branches with the free day pillar calculator, and see the glossary index for the other twelve stars.

FAQ

Is 장성살 a good star?

Mostly yes. It is linked with leadership and presence and is graded as favorable. Readers only caution when the chart is already very forceful.

Is the General Star bad for women?

Some older texts said so, reflecting old social expectations. Modern practice reads it the same way for everyone: as leadership and decisiveness.

Why is my year branch my General Star?

If you were born in a Rat, Horse, Rooster or Rabbit year, your year branch is the central branch of its frame, so the star always sits in your year pillar.
