The twelve stars (십이신살)

The Disaster Star (재살 災殺 jaesal) is a twelve-star mark that tradition links with restriction, confinement and pressure from authority. It is also called 수옥살 (囚獄殺 suoksal), the "prison star." It sits on the branch that clashes your year frame's General Star, and it is found from your year branch. Despite its name, it describes a pattern of tension and control, not an actual disaster.

What it means

災 means calamity, and older texts used the star to warn of legal trouble, being held back or being caught in someone else's dispute. Orienteller's engine grades it as harsh within the twelve-star system.

The key to reading it is its position. Because it is the branch that opposes the General Star, it represents the force that pushes back against authority, or that authority uses to push back against you. In a modern reading that becomes a relationship with rules and institutions: some people with a strong Disaster Star work inside systems of control (law, compliance, policing, security, audit), while others meet those systems as obstacles. Korean practice treats it as double-edged for exactly that reason. The same star that reads as restriction can read as a talent for structure, discipline and working within limits.

How it is found

Take your year branch's triple frame (삼합 三合 samhap). The frame's central branch is the General Star; the branch directly opposite it on the circle of twelve is the Disaster Star.

Worked example: someone born in a Pig, Rabbit or Goat year belongs to the Wood frame, whose central branch is Myo 卯 (Rabbit). The branch that clashes Myo is Yu 酉 (Rooster), so their Disaster Star is the Rooster. If their day pillar is Eul-yu, the star sits on the day branch. The other frames give O 午 (Horse) for Monkey, Rat or Dragon years, Ja 子 (Rat) for Tiger, Horse or Dog years, and Myo 卯 (Rabbit) for Snake, Rooster or Ox years.

Orienteller follows the classical method of counting from the year branch. Many Korean practitioners also check the twelve stars from the day branch, so results can differ between sources.

How it shows up in a reading

Since the Disaster Star is defined by a clash, the question readers ask first is whether the General Star is also present. If both appear, the chart holds its own tension: authority and resistance inside one person, which can read as someone who leads by enforcing standards or who constantly negotiates with structure. If only the Disaster Star appears, the pressure is read as coming from outside.

Placement shapes the setting. In the month pillar it points to tension at work or with institutions; on the day branch, to strong opinions within close relationships; in the hour pillar, to plans that meet resistance before they settle. A harmony that binds the branch is read as the pressure being contained.

The Ten Gods on the branch carry much of the meaning. A Disaster Star holding Seven Killings is the classic picture of strict authority; one holding a Resource star softens into rules that protect. Helper stars such as the Heavenly Noble are said to ease it. Check your chart with the free day pillar calculator, and see the glossary index for the Robbery Star and others.

FAQ

Does 재살 mean something bad will happen to me?

No. It is a traditional marker for restriction and pressure, not a prediction of events. Its meaning depends on the rest of the chart.

Why is the Disaster Star also called the prison star?

Older texts linked it with confinement and legal trouble, hence 수옥살. Modern readers interpret it as a relationship with rules, control and authority.

Is the Disaster Star always opposite the General Star?

Yes. For each frame it is the branch that clashes the frame's central branch, which is the General Star.
